Editorial Methodology

How we research, compare, calculate, and correct · Last updated August 6, 2026

The Skeptical Hound Research Desk is the brand-based editorial team responsible for this publication. We do not present the desk as a veterinary practice, insurance agency, law firm, financial adviser, or academic research institute. Our job is narrower: inspect source documents, show the assumptions, and help readers ask better questions before spending money.

Source firstContracts and regulators outrank marketing summaries.
Like for likeWe normalize plan structures before comparing them.
Commercial firewallPayment cannot buy rank, inclusion, or a favorable verdict.

1. What we cover

We publish general educational content about dog ownership costs, pet insurance structures, subscriptions, gear, food, and related purchase decisions. We do not provide individualized veterinary, insurance, legal, or financial advice.

2. Our source hierarchy

  1. Controlling documents: state-filed policy forms, contracts, endorsements, statutes, regulations, and regulator guidance.
  2. Primary data: government datasets, original industry reports, and clearly described surveys.
  3. Provider documentation: current product pages, help centers, sample policies, and pricing or subscription terms.
  4. Independent secondary sources: used for context or consumer experience, not to override controlling documents.

Provider marketing pages are evidence of what a provider says, not independent proof that the claim is complete or typical. When a summary conflicts with a contract, the contract controls.

3. How comparisons are built

We define the decision first, then compare the features capable of changing that decision. For pet insurance, that can include eligibility, exclusions, waiting periods, deductible structure, reimbursement formula, benefit limits, exam-fee treatment, direct-payment mechanics, and state availability. We do not convert unlike structures into a single universal winner.

Quote comparisons should use the same dog, ZIP code, deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit whenever the providers allow it. A price gathered under one set of assumptions is not presented as a general price for all readers.

4. Calculations and cost ranges

We label arithmetic scenarios, reported averages, and our own planning ranges separately. Calculators expose editable assumptions and round only for readability. Size or breed examples are planning benchmarks, not individualized quotes: location, age, health, coat, activity, and care choices can matter more than the breed label.

5. Verdicts and rankings

Our three verdict labels - Passes the sniff test, Smells fishy, and Hard pass - summarize the evidence for a defined use case. We do not sell rankings. If we publish an ordered list, the ranking criteria, material tradeoffs, and last review date must appear on the page.

6. Affiliate and commercial relationships

Commercial links are disclosed close to the link and on our Funding & Disclosure page. A relationship cannot purchase a score, placement, omission, or positive conclusion. Providers without a commercial relationship remain eligible for inclusion when relevant.

7. Review, updates, and corrections

Material claims are checked against the linked source and each article carries a review date. Insurance and subscription content is rechecked when terms change or when a reader or provider identifies a possible error. Material corrections are made in the article; we do not silently preserve a conclusion that the evidence no longer supports.

8. Tools and accountability

Research, drafting, calculation, and automation tools may assist the desk. The Research Desk remains responsible for selecting sources, checking claims, resolving conflicts, and publishing the final text. Tools are not treated as authorities.
