About The Skeptical Hound
Published by The Skeptical Hound Research Desk · Updated August 6, 2026
The Skeptical Hound is an independent publication for dog owners who are tired of being sold to. Pet marketing is built to separate you from your money — “premium,” “vet-recommended,” “must-have.” Our job is to test which claims survive contact with published terms and actual numbers, and which are a trap wearing a nice collar.
What we do
We take one dog-money decision at a time — pet insurance, food, gear, subscriptions, and “deals” — and run it through the sniff test. Every verdict is one of three: Passes the sniff test, Smells fishy, or Hard pass. No fence-sitting, and no verdict we cannot support with evidence and math.
Who publishes this site
The Skeptical Hound Research Desk is the brand-based editorial team that researches, edits, and publishes this site. We use a desk name instead of presenting a single public personality, but we do not use that name to imply academic, veterinary, insurance, legal, or financial credentials we do not hold.
The desk is accountable for source selection, calculations, corrections, and the final published wording. Our full standards are set out in the Editorial Methodology.
How we reach a verdict
- We start from primary sources where possible, including policy documents, regulator guidance, manufacturer terms, government data, and original industry reports.
- We link the sources, so you can inspect what was published and when we last checked it.
- We show the math, not just the conclusion.
- We separate predictable costs from tail risk. Predictable expenses belong in a budget; a large uncertain loss may require savings, insurance, or both.
- We update when the numbers change. Vet prices, policy forms, and subscription terms move; stale advice is bad advice.
About the name
“Banks” is our bloodhound mascot and editorial voice — a stand-in for the skeptical, numbers-first attitude we bring to every review. We are a small independent operation, not a veterinary practice, insurer, insurance agency, law firm, or financial firm. What we offer is careful research and plain-English analysis, not professional credentials.
How we stay independent
The Skeptical Hound does not sell rankings or favorable coverage. Commercial links, if used, are disclosed close to the link and on our Funding & Disclosure page. A commercial relationship cannot determine inclusion, ordering, or a verdict.
